# A0002 - How to create fog in After Effects CS3? #

Instructor : Pradeep Mamgain

In this tutorial we will talk about the process of simulating fog using Fog 3D effect under 3D Channel Category. This effect works with 8-bpc color. 3D channel effects only work with the files that contain Auxiliary Channel information. In After Effects you can import RLA, RPF, PIC/ZPIC, EI/EIZ. 3D Channel effects don't affect other type of files. Read Auxiliary Channel KB article.

[A]. Download the project file, open project in After Effects. Drag RLA footage on to the New Comp Icon and create a new composition. Apply Fog 3D effect (A1) to the layer. Set Fog Color to a bright color so that you can see effect clearly. Fog Start Depth and Fog End Depth determines the start and the end of the Diffuse scattering. The default values are too large for our liking so first we will adjust the default minimum and maximum values for these slider. For this Right Click on the Box and click on Edit Value (A2) . A new dialogue will pop up set Slider Range (A3) to -2 to +2.

[B]. Now we need the depth values for the pixels, the easiest way to achieve this is click on the top and bottom of the image and not down the values (B1, B2) that appears in the Info Palette. As you can see clearly under the yellow highlights that we have got values 0.80 and 0.46. Type these values and check the immediate feedback you get in the Comp Display (B3). Adjust these two values to set the Fog scattering according to your need.

[C]. Next option we have is Fog Opacity and it is self explanatory.

[D]. Scattering Density controls the volume of fog density at its start point, increase this value to make fog dense at the start point.

[E]. If you are composting the fog layer above any other layer and you want transparency at the back of the scene then turn off Foggy Background.

[F]. By adding Gradient Layer you can control the Fog Density. This effect will decide about the Fog Density by examining the luminance values of the Gradient Layer. This layer should be grayscale image. The easiest way to create a layer of this type is first create a Black Solid and apply Fractal Noise to it. In this case make it as big as the size of the footage.

Layer Editor
[G]. Last thing is Layer Contribution, this will decide how much Gradient Layer Luminance will affect the Fog Density.
