To create a new file choose File > New or press Ctrl+X, blender will ask you to erase all, say yes, if you don’t want to save the current scene. Use Append or Link command; if you want to merge a blender file (.blend) and Insert to open another file types in blender. Press F1 to open a file or choose File > Open. Blender opens a window from where you can pick the file you want to open , as shown in Fig - 3.1. To Save a file press CTRL+W on keyborad or choose File > Save. To save file with different name, Press F2 key or choose File > Save As. The window underneath the mosue pointer will temprarily become the File Selection window. Same window appears as shown in Fig – 3.1, choose a location where you want to save the file and press Save Button.

Save File
When you save the file, save dialouge appears, pressing + & - keys on the Numpad increments or decrements a number contained in a filename. Everytime you save a file your previous save becomes a backup file and saved with a extension .blend1. To append a file choose File > Append or Link or press Shift + F1 on the keyboard. Append window will open up, as shown in Fig – 3.2. You can append multiple files into blender. Use right mouse click to select or de-select multiple files. You can copy selected data in the project or place a link for it. Choose appropriate settings from the top of the window.



Append File

Once you select the file to be appended, blender will ask you what elements you want to import, as shown in Fig-3.3. You can append anything; camera, lights, materials and so on.

Compress Files

File > Compress File , option is used to compress the files, thus eliminating the dead space.

Screenshots

To take screenshots of blender setup we have two options, File > Screenshot Subwindow (CTRL+F3) and File > Screenshot All (CTRL+SHIFt+F3). First command, takes picture of last active window while second command takes picture of whole blender window. It is pretty useful when you work in a team and want to share your progress of work.
